Constantin Héger was schoolmaster of the Pensionnat Héger in Brussels where Charlotte and Emily studied French.

With the money from Aunt Branwell, the ability to start a school was closer than ever. The timing, however wasn’t yet right. Charlotte believed she needed more time learning French before starting the school. Plus, she had developed a very close relationship to the school’s headmaster, Constantin Héger. Emily was so glad to be back home, that she didn’t want to return to Brussels. Emily stepped into Aunt Branwell’s position of managing the parsonage for her father.

Charlotte returned to Brussels and continued teaching English and studying French at Pensionnat Héger for one more year. Her admiration for headmaster Héger grew more visible, straining her relationship with his wife, who also taught at the school. Charlotte realized she needed to leave the pensionnat and Héger. She returned to Haworth on January 1, 1844, leaving behind a man who many believe was inspiration for Mr. Rochester in Jane Eyre, as well as William Crimsworth in The Professor, both love interests of the main characters.

Upon her return to England, Charlotte resumed plans with Emily and Anne about starting their own school. In July of 1844, Charlotte had an advertisement printed which said:

THE MISSES BRONTË’S ESTABLISHMENT

FOR

THE BOARD AND EDUCATION

OF A LIMITED NUMBER OF

YOUNG LADIES,

THE PARSONAGE, HAWORTH,

NEAR BRADFORD.

In October of that same year, the sisters abandoned the idea of their own boarding school for girls when no one applied for admission.
